Gewehr 1888 ‘Commission Rifle’ German Troops in their 'Schützengraben’ or trench. The Gewehr '88 was based on Ferdinand Mannlicher’s straight-bolt action. The 1888 Commission Rifle or Gewehr 88 was adopted by AKO in November 1888 by Kaiser Wilhelm. It has also been referred to as the Reich Gewehr and Mauser Mannlicher. Ironically enough, the Alte Armee never called the Rifle 88 (Gewehr 88) a Commission Rifle, this is an English language label probably originating in the USA, which has now become universally used.
